8-channel Fixed Media (2025)
Much of my work focuses on alternative tuning systems. Until recently this work has mainly centered on just intonation, tuning systems based on the harmonic series. In this piece, however, I make use of higher-cardinality EDO’s (Equal Divisions of the Octave). For example, one passage is in 21-tone equal temperament, meaning the octave is divided evenly into 21 steps, which are smaller than the traditional half-step. Within these tuning systems, I make use of scales that are transpositionally symmetrical, meaning that they map back onto themselves when transposed by a particular interval. The scales and chord progressions are also maximally even, a property they share with the diatonic system, To my ear this property seems to contribute in large part to the harmony’s appeal. By the end of the piece, the musical thought matures into a sort of lullaby for my precious, 4-month-old daughter. In short, this is an 8-channel, maximally even, transpositionally symmetrical, 21-tone-equal-tempered concert lullaby for fixed media. You know, the kind most dads sing to their children.
Archinovica
Archinovica is a Digital Augmented Instrument (DAI) that alters the tuning of an electronic piano during performance based on what the musician plays. It allows modulation in JI. Collaborate with us on this project.
